Catching That Perfect Fish

Before you can catch the perfect fish you have to decide which species of fish
you want to go for. While some people love trout others might be avid bass
fisherman. Since bass are found in warm waters and trout in cold waters, someone
might be disappointed if you did not consider the type of fish before picking a
location.

Deciding on what type of fish you want to catch narrows down your destinations
for you a bit which can help in further planning. Don't worry though, there's
plenty of places to go no matter which type of fish you are angling for!

Size Or Quantity?

Some anglers like to catch fish after fish after fish. They aren't happy unless
they are reeling them in and size isn't really that important, although there's
always that hope that the next nibble could be a big one. Others are only
interested in catching the big fish in the pond and will sit patiently all day
waiting for him to give a nibble.

While there are many places that offer an opportunity for both types of fishing,
this should be discussed beforehand so that each member of the trip can be sure
they are getting the type of fishing they enjoy.

Fishing Style

One other thing to consider is the method you will use to catch the fish. Will
you be wading into streams? Trolling? Deep sea fishing? Each one is a different
experience and many people have their preference. Make sure your group agrees on
a method of fishing and that the destination you are thinking about offers that
type of fishing.

As with anything, what you can afford will largely impact what you can get for
your fishing vacation

You need to get together with your group and decide what you can spend. Perhaps
you will have to make some compromises such as sleeping in a tent instead of a
cabin so you can afford a couple days with a good local guide.

The hard part here is getting everyone in the group to agree on how much to
spend and where to put the bulk of the money. One way to save money is to do
your own cooking or have everyone in the group bring a frozen dish along (enough
to feed everyone) and you'll have free meals for several nights.

When planning your trip, don't forget about shower and bathroom facilities -
especially if this is a family trip. If you have opted for camping, the showers
and bathrooms will be community so you will have to share. A cabin on the other
hand will provide some privacy.

So, if you really want a great fishing trip, start by planning just exactly what
you want out of the trip and how much you are willing to spend. Do it right and
you can have the fishing trip of a lifetime.

The new UK Statistics Authority comes into existence today (April Fools Day 2008). It is an independent body, with powers and the obligation to promote, improve, and safeguard official statistics across the UK. Its aim is to rebuild public trust in Government statistics.

There is a general perception that statistical knowledge is all-too-frequently intentionally misused, by finding ways to interpret the data that are favorable to the presenter. A famous saying attributed to Benjamin Disraeli is, "There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies, and statistics." And Harvard President Lawrence Lowell wrote in 1909 that statistics, "like veal pies, are good if you know the person that made them, and are sure of the ingredients."

"About time" was the immediate reaction from The Tea Musk Times, "Statistics quoted by politicians and political pressure groups are often heavily weighted in favour of their own prejudices and agendas.

If this new drive for honesty and openness can be really believed on "April Fools Day"... TMT gives its full support and will watch closely how things progress".

The new Publication Hub will list each day's new National Statistics releases from all Government Departments as they are published at 9:30 am daily. There will in each case be an electronic link to the relevant page of each Department's website. The hub will therefore permit direct access to the statistical releases produced by statisticians in Departments, without political commentary. This is an interim version of the UK Statistics Authority's Publication Hub which is currently under development.

The Reason Why - I Don't Like Being Bullied by Moronic Joomla "Experts"

A couple of weeks ago I posted a question to one of the many Joomla help forums:"Is it possible to develop Joomla templates using Microsoft FrontPage as the main WYSIWYG editor?
Does anyone have any helpful tips or suggestions to help with this project?"

Well, to my dismay I was bombarded with "flame" after "flame" replies in the forum. It seems there's a lot of Joomla designers out there who absolutely HATE the idea of Microsoft, Microsoft FrontPage, HTML table code and (in there esteemed, unenlightened opinion) ANYONE stupid enough to consider building a Joomla template using ANY Microsoft product.

I replied to first person's vile response by explaining that I have been using FP for over twelve years. I know it has limitations and faults. However, it was one of the first programs that allowed web developers to actually see what the web page under development actually looks like while data was being inputted. This speeded up the whole development process and probably aided the growth of the Internet as a whole.

FrontPage was designed to interact with all of the Microsoft Office Programs and that probably accounts for many of the perceived bugs user often come up against.

This (reasonable and polite) comment was met with absolute derision and outright hostility by many of the forum members. Not only did the forum replies become far more abusive, someone also did a bit of research and found my email address. They then began an email spam campaign of such intensity that I had to close the email account down.

So be warned; so called "Joomla Support Forums" can be dangerous places to ask innocent questions about FrontPage, unless you intend to trash the software and anyone using it.

OK... This is MY RESPONSE

The V sign, when the palm is facing toward the person giving the sign, has long been an insulting gesture in England and later in the rest of the United Kingdom, as well as in Ireland and parts of France. It is frequently used to signify defiance (especially to authority), contempt or derision and is often accompanied by the phrase 'fuck off'.

Project: Joomla Template Build Using FrontPage and Other Software

Introduction
Proving a point can work out to be expensive and ultimately produce worthless results. Therefore; this project will only use resources freely available to the author and aim to publish a fully working, interesting and hopefully profitable web site.

1. A new sub domain of http://www.jackchosting.com/ (my reseller account at HostGator) was setup and a default install of Joomla was uploaded to http://www.teamusk.com/ (an unused domain from years ago).
2. The aim of the Tea Musk site is to present controversial headlines of current events. This is actually an old idea, revamped for this project, as it does present some unusual coding problems.
3. Make the site user friendly and allow visitor participation.
4. Reduce maintenance of the site to the absolute minimum.

The Curtis LeMay phrase "bomb them back into the Stone Age" implies a fierce attack that utterly destroys its target's infrastructure, forcing its survivors to revert to primitive technology in order to survive.

UK political parties might not use the phrase "tax them back to the Stone Age" in public, but there does seem to be an increasing alliance between the Government and Opposition Parties to use taxation as the ultimate weapon of choice to fight modern social ills. Small time "one issue" pressure groups, PR companies and lobbyists all contribute to the political panic "tax action plan", because not to act or tax is seen as a weakness.

Meanwhile, recent revelations that ONE POINT SEVEN BILLION POUNDS (£1,700,000,000) of taxpayers money has been overpaid to General Practitioners and mostly used to "top-up" personal wages has dropped out of the headlines.

Billion may refer to either of two numbers: 1,000,000,000 (number), one thousand million or 1,000,000,000,000 (number), one million, million. No clear guidance has yet been given regarding which billion has been used in the over payment of GPs.

Researchers have found even primitive man had to pay a high rate of tax on each "kill" brought back to camp, sometimes up to 95% of the meat would be taken from him. Modern man has around 48% of earnings taken either at source or by stealth taxes, but don't worry; politicians are working hard to retrograde your standard of living back to Stone Age levels.

Amalfi
is the main town of the Costiera Amalfitana, the spectacular stretch of

tradition dates back to Roman times, and it was the seat of the oldest
university in Europe, the Schola Medica Salernitana. In more modem times it is
best remembered for the Allied troops landing on its beaches, during the second
world war. Salerno isn't a tourist town, but it's a very sociable and lively
place with plenty of street life and an intriguing choice of eating places, and
makes a good base to explore Mediterranean culture and the fascinating
landscapes of the Amalfi Coast. While in the area, a must-see to the east of
Salerno is Paestum, which is one of the most important archaeological sites in
the county, containing see some of the best preserved Greek ruins, architecture
and monuments.

After leaving Salerno, the Amalfi drive passes through Vietri sul
Mare, a lovely seaside town famous for its handmade ceramic tiles and
pottery, before reaching the bustling resort of Maiori and the
small picturesque town of Minori.

360° panoramic image showing the south side of the church, surrounding countryside and village. A line of ancient tombstones is visible in the first few frames; if you use the plus key to zoom in some names and details become readable.
This panorama used 12 portrait images taken using a homemade pano-head and a Pentax digital camera. Probably, NOT one of my best 360's due to over exposure and low winter sunlight. However, I also took some great still shots with almost perfect exposure of the church and a patch of wonderfully colourful snowdrops and early bulbs.

Today's Ripped Headline has really been "in the making" for quite a while.
Using taxation as a tool to control social attitudes and consumption has never worked in the long-term.
Perhaps the Tories are right; NLP (same old crap) really does secretly follow a hardcore socialist agenda where ultimately, every penny earned will be taken back by the state.
The Curtis LeMay phrase "bomb them back into the Stone Age" implies a fierce attack that utterly destroys its target's infrastructure, forcing its survivors to revert to primitive technology in order to survive.
UK political parties might not use the phrase "tax them back to the Stone Age" in public, but there does seem to be an increasing alliance between the Government and Opposition Parties to use taxation as the ultimate weapon of choice to fight modern social ills.
Perhaps one day, the Great British Public will quietly sleepwalk into a "LeMay Tax Policy"... forward; back to the STONE AGE!!!

It seems like most of the traffic is actually being generated by authors rather than random visits by search engine generated traffic.

Experimenting with Publishing a Full E-Text Book

LPR recently carried out a content experiment using Joomla CMS software, which involved publishing a full E-Text Book.

I was asked to search around for a suitable book, no longer in copyright; I found one of my favourite Jules Verne books from my school (1960's) reading list.

The experiment went quite well and the full book was published yesterday using the http://www.articlecritics.com/ web site.

It's really amazing to re-read the full book with an "adult" perspective. Some of the comments and actions are definitely NOT "politically correct" in today's atmosphere and will probably
pander to the denial and shame some people feel regarding the British Empire.

I guess the first few paragraphs might be cause for concern in some circles:

There was a large audience assembled on the 14th of
January, 1862, at the session of the Royal Geographical Society, No. 3
Waterloo Place, London. The president, Sir Francis M----, made an important
communication to his colleagues, in an address that was frequently interrupted
by applause.

This rare specimen of eloquence terminated with the
following sonorous phrases bubbling over with patriotism:

"England has always marched at the head of
nations" (for, the reader will observe, the nations always march at the
head of each other), "by the intrepidity of her explorers in the line of
geographical discovery." (General assent). "Dr. Samuel Ferguson, one
of her most glorious sons, will not reflect discredit on his origin."
("No, indeed!" from all parts of the hall.)

"This attempt, should it succeed" ("It will
succeed!"), "will complete and link together the notions, as yet
disjointed, which the world entertains of African cartology" (vehement
applause); "and, should it fail, it will, at least, remain on record as
one of the most daring conceptions of human genius!" (Tremendous
cheering.)

King John may have altered the course of English history by indicating his agreement to sign the Magna Carta at an impromptu meeting of parliamentarians at the Old Parliament Oak located near his hunting lodge "King John's Palace".

Magna Carta required the King to renounce certain rights, respect certain legal procedures and accept that his will could be bound by the law. It explicitly protected certain rights of the king's subjects, whether free or fettered — most notably the right of Habeas Corpus, meaning that they had rights against unlawful imprisonment.

I've tried to come to terms with the present and past UK government's policy in the "War Against Terror".

Internment
Internment is the imprisonment or confinement of people, commonly in large groups, without trial.

NOTE: Magna Carta - "most notably the right of Habeas Corpus, meaning that they had rights against unlawful imprisonment".

Concentration
No government or organization has used concentration camp to describe its own facilities, using instead terms such as internment camp, resettlement camp, detention facility, etc, regardless of the actual circumstances of the camp, which can vary a great deal.
How many people have been hanged/confined when there "rights against unlawful imprisonment" have been ignored?

Seems to me: A charter made law in 1215 should still be relevant.

The value of being "free" can only be really appreciated by a person in shackles.

My Two Weeks in Crete

In reflection I should have cancelled the holiday.
My decision making process in the past few months has been far from perfect.
However, had I not come, I wouldn't have had the pleasure of my Uncle's company for a week that passed all to quickly.

I hardly saw anything of Crete, other than a few short walks and taxi rides.
John gave me a book to read called "Freedom and Death" written by Nikos Kazantzakis, which has some fantastic descriptions of how the fight for Crete's freedom was carried out in the late 1800's.

Believe me, the descendants of almost everyone describe in the book can be seen today.
Not sure if I admire "Captain Michales", but I'd sure like to have him next to me in my next firefight. Actually, the translation from Greek to English occasionally throws up some amazing sentences...

"She walked down the street as though petroleum was in her arse"

I'm assuming that the translator meant she had a bit of a hip sway going on!!!
The book is quite hard going and describes some tragic events and horrific atrocities on both sides.

I finished reading it this afternoon.

Tonight, with my first glass of wine, I toasted all the fighting Captains and the island of Crete. May it be free for ever.

History has a habit of repeating.

Invading countries or occupying nation groups will always generate extreme resistance that doesn't go away after a few weeks or years. Patriotic resistance and self sacrifice will continue for generations.

Hopefully, the lesson will be learnt when we're finally forced to withdraw our forces from Afghanistan and Iraq.

Now, on to Ireland...

It should be an united island, it's common f***ing sense, but sadly, that bag of bones will probably take another few generations to finally resolve itself.
Ireland WILL be an island united by common sense... one day.
So, just like any other package tourist.

When you're a start-up business with a shoe-string budget, that photocopied sheet with a simple list of your dishes was enough to get by. But as your business grows and becomes more successful, the time will eventually come when somebody says, "Isn't it time we got a more professional-looking menu?"

Yes, indeed, a full-featured, laminated menu just like the big restaurants use will definitely be necessary in most cases, if your restaurant is to be taken seriously. Even if you don't go for the large, laminated book-style folding menu, there are many alternative styles to choose from.

To get one thing out of the way right away: you are probably better off getting a professional graphics designer for this number. Designing a menu has many skills in common with designing a website, and your restaurant may not have somebody computer-savvy enough to figure out how to do it, let alone the artistic skill to make it look good!

But if you are up to the challenge, you will need: A computer with design and editing software, a separate graphics program, digital photos of servings, clip-art, and either a printer capable of high-resolution color printing or a print shop which will publish your design. If you hired a logo designer to brand-mark your signs and logos throughout your business, you'll want your company's logo on the menu as well. Oh, yes, and a spell-checker!

But there are some problems with this format: HTML can't do custom fonts because they can't display in your web browser, it isn't good at keeping pages to a size standard, and is not powerful enough to handle more demanding layouts.

PDF - This is the most commonly used standard. The Portable Document Format is widely used for all purposes throughout the printing industry. A sophisticated PDF editor can design anything from a business card to a newspaper. It uses rigid page design and the editors for PDF have all of the standard sizes selectable from the menu. It can handle any font, image, and layout you throw at it, and is also likely to be preferred by the print shop. The only downside: PDF editors are expensive. Proprietary software patents have choked out most of the competition, resulting in a highly monopolized industry.

SVG, XML - This is the second most commonly encountered standard, and in fact much of the printing industry is starting to use this format more widely. They are each capable of the full set of PDF features, and even add some new tricks that PDF can't do. SVG and ML combine in the same document. SVG is not only a means of producing a document, but is a graphics language as well, so you can draw in it! Software for editing SVG and XML documents is widely available as free and open source software, and in every case the free software is at least 99% as powerful as the expensive commercial version. The only downside here is that it takes some extra learning to use and understand SVG and XML. For example, web browser have been able to render SVG and XML elements for years, and yet you don't see much of it on the Internet, because there just aren't that many people skilled enough to use it. You don't exactly have to have a computer science degree - but it won't hurt!

Whatever document format you use, you will have many considerations in planning your layout. If you use photographs, you will need to have a professional photographer to snap photos of your food and provide you with the images in digital format so you can include them in the menu. You will want to pick a font and layout consistent with your restaurant's atmosphere and your business image.

You will want it to be attractive as possible, but not be so "busy" that it is difficult to read. And using clip-art is convenient and easy, but will make your design look like a tired cliche. Using custom-made graphics, on the other hand, will require digital graphics design skills that aren't too common in the general public. You might also want to provide versions in different languages, and a braille menu for the visually impaired.

Humankind has long been fascinated by the beauty of gold and since the earliest days of civilization gold has been used to adorn us in the form of jewelry. Let's take a look at how gold jewelry has been used in the various parts of the world during the last five thousand years.

The Sumerian Civilization, located in present-day Iraq, is well known as the place where one of the first systems of writing was developed. There gold was used to make necklaces earrings, rings, bracelets and other ornaments as early as 2500 BC.

Sumerian goldsmiths used sophisticated metalworking techniques such as cold hammering, casting, soldering, and were particularly skilled in decorating with filigree (fine-wire ornamentation). They also practiced "granulation" using minute drops of gold to enhance the beauty of the jewelry.

Jewelry played an important role in Egyptian civilization where its use dates back to 3000 BC. A tomb painting of late 15th century BC shows a metalworker using tongs and a blowpipe to anneal gold. The famous tomb of Tutankhamun or King Tut contains numerous pieces of fine gold jewelry embedded with precious stones. These pieces of jewelry are on display in the national museum in Cairo and thousands of visitors each day marvel at the skill of these early goldsmiths and jewelers.

On Mediterranean island of Crete, now part of Greece, gold jewelry also played an important role as early as 2400 BC. The jewelers of Crete may have gotten their knowledge from West Asia and they were experts in fashioning gold jewelry.

Diadems, hair ornaments, beads, bracelets, and complex chains have been found in Minoan tombs on Crete. It is also believed that Asian techniques of filigree and granulation were introduced to Crete around 2000 BC.

Around 1550 BC Minoan culture and its jewelry styles spread to Greece, then dominated by the city-state of Mycenea, located 90 miles southwest of present-day Athens.

Metalworking techniques spread outward from Greece and reached northern Europe as early as 1800 BC. There is also evidence that the Celtic and early British people traded with the eastern Mediterranean civilizations by this time and exchanged their products for gold beads.

By 1200 BC jewelry making was flourishing in Central and Western Europe. Bronze and gold was used to make jewelry and the spiral was the most common type of decoration. Twisted gold torcs were made in the British Isles and northern France from the 5th to the 1st century BC. Torcs, also spelled Torq, were rigid circular neck rings or necklaces that were open-ended at the front. Massive circlets for the necks and arms were the characteristic ornament of the chiefs of the Celtic race. The Celts also used enamel and inlay to decorate jewelry.

In Greece during the Hellenistic Age (the period just after the time of Alexander the Great, 323-30 BC) Greek jewelry was characterized by its great variety of forms and fine workmanship. The Heracles-knot, developed in Greece, remained a popular motif into Roman times.

Colorful jewelry was an important characteristic of the Migration period (4th to 8th centuries AD) which followed the collapse of the Roman Empire. Mediterranean goldsmiths continued to produce refined jewelry but the jewelry of the European tribes dominated the period. They produced abstract styles and worked in enamels and inlaid stones. During this era, jewelry design was based on the setting in gold of precious stones and pearls in colorful patterns. Antique cameo gems were prized and when set in early medieval jewelry and were given a Christian interpretation. 7g yeast, 1 cup lukewarm water – if need more add extra but don’t make it soggy, 3 cups plain flour, pinch of salt, pepper, cheese, not mozzarella cheese but either shredded tasty cheese or shredded plain cheese, ham, tomatoes, tuna (chunk tuna) instead of ham canola oil
Put flour in bowl make a hole in the centre then add water and yeast mix together with pinch of salt. Work the dough don’t make it real dry. Then put in plastic bag, close bag up. Then put in a warm spot such as under blankets somewhere warm for about 1hour to 1.5 hours for it to rise to double its size.

While it’s rising get ham and cheese, not mozzarella cheese but either shredded tasty cheese or shredded plain cheese. Cut up ham add cheese then mix together.

Roll out dough to pasty round sizes do one at a time, add ham, cheese and sprinkle of pepper no salt then roll up pasty. When rolled up with filling at the ends with a fork press it and go around the edges. Then prick it lightly with fork twice around the middle.

Continue doing that until finished. Once done put 2 at a time in a frying pan with canola oil so oil covers the whole lot make sure oil is hot. (Just be careful because of heat) Cook to nice gold colour about 4-5 minutes then turn over and do other side. Take them out and put on paper towel to get rid of some of the oil. Can eat them basically straight away or you might wait to they cool down that is up to you.

There is no problems with freezing them they still taste fantastic.

If you want to add tomatoes you can but have it within 24 hours but don’t freeze any with tomatoes, what I do is if take them out the freezer when they thaw out I cut in half and add tomato and put in oven or griller.
Can also have chunk tuna instead of ham with the cheese. Tuna and cheese is also okay to freeze.
Also if you like you can add chopped up onion or anything that you enjoy.

Without Oil Secret Recipes Frittlers Part 2 (Italian Pasties)

You do exactly the same as with oil but instead of using oil and cooking them in a frying pan put them in the oven for roughly 10-15 minutes on 200 Degrees Celsius or 400 Degrees Fahrenheit then flip over again for extra 10 minutes and enjoy. (You can put on just a touch of oil on the Frittlers just before putting them in the oven).

If you are looking for fine Italian wine and food, consider the Tuscany region of central Italy. You may find a bargain, and I hope that you’ll have fun on this fact-filled wine education tour. Tuscany is located on the central western part of Italy on the Tyrrhenian Sea. It gets its name from an Etruscan tribe that settled the area about three thousand years ago. It has belonged to the Romans, the Lombards, and the Franks.

More than four hundred years ago under the Medicis, Tuscany became a major European center. It is undoubtedly one of Italy’s top tourist destinations as well as an ideal place for your villa when you hit it big, really big. According to one Seinfeld episode there are no villas to rent in Tuscany, but that was several years ago. On the other hand, time in Tuscany as elsewhere in Italy is measured in centuries.

Tuscany’s total population is about 3.5 million. Florence is the birthplace of the Italian Renaissance and the administrative center of Tuscany. It is one of Italy’s top tourist destinations, whose sites of interest are too numerous to list here. Siena and Pisa are two other major tourist destinations. Tuscany is a center of industrial production, in particular metallurgy, chemicals, and textiles. Given the region’s importance as an international art center for centuries, don’t be surprised that it is an excellent place to appreciate and purchase fashion, jewelry, leather goods, marble, and other items of beauty. Florence is the home of the house of Gucci.

Tuscany produces a wide variety of cereal, olives, vegetables, and fruit. But not only vegetarians eat well. It is home to cattle, horses, pigs, and poultry. One local specialty is wild boar. On the coast, seafood is abundant. Tuscany devotes over one hundred fifty thousand acres to grapevines, it ranks 4th among the 20 Italian regions. Its total annual wine production is about 58 million gallons, giving it an 8th place. About 70% of the wine production is red or rosé, leaving 30% for white.

The region produces 44 DOC wines. DOC stands for Denominazione di Origine Controllata, which may be translated as Denomination of Controlled Origin, presumably a high-quality wine and 7 DOCG white wine. The G in DOCG stands for Garantita, but there is in fact no guarantee that such wines are truly superior. The region produces 9 DOC wines. Tuscany also produces Super Tuscan wines, wines that may not have a prestigious classification but that are known to be outstanding.

These wines are arguably the main reason that Italy was forced to revise its wine classification system. Fully 55% of Tuscan wine carries the DOC or DOCG designation. And remember, many of Tuscany’s best wines carry neither designation. Tuscany! is home to more than three dozen major and secondary grape varieties, about half white and half red. Widely grown international white grape varieties include Trebbiano, Malvasia, and Sauvignon Blanc.

The best-known strictly Italian white varieties are Vermentino and Vernaccia. Widely grown international red grape varieties include Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. The best-known Italian red variety is Sangiovese, which is grown elsewhere, including California. A strictly Italian variety is Canaiolo. Before reviewing the Tuscan wine and cheese that we were lucky enough to purchase at a local wine store and a local Italian food store, here are a few suggestions of what to eat with indigenous wines when touring this beautiful region. Start with Panzanella, Bread and Tomato Salad. For a second course, eat or share a Bistecca alla Fiorentina, (Texas-sized) Beef Steak. If you have room, indulge in a Torta Rustica, Cornmeal Cake with Cream.

OUR WINE REVIEW POLICY

While we have communicated with well over a thousand Italian wine producers and merchants to help prepare these articles, our policy is clear. All wines that we taste and review are purchased at the full retail price. Wine Reviewed Badia a Coltibuono Chianti Classico 2004 12.8% alcohol about $21 I’ll start by quoting the marketing materials. “…A wine that would complement a veal chop or game birds, expect aromas of cranberry and cherry. On the palate, it should be round and ripe with enough tannin for balance.” As a point of interest, the label included the warning “contains sulphites” in ten languages.

I first tasted this wine with slow-cooked boneless beef ribs and potatoes accompanied by a spicy commercial Turkish salad. The wine was thick, loaded with plum and cherry flavors, and some tobacco. The tannins were moderate. Dessert was a cocoa cake whose label said strudel. The wine went well, its fruit really came out. I next tasted the Chianti Classico with slow-cooked meat balls, cauliflower and chickpeas in a tomato sauce, and potato wedges. The wine was plumy and powerful, with very pleasant tannins, a little tobacco and a little earth. Just so you know, I’m not usually partial to tannins. The wine was so round that I enjoyed finishing the glass when the food was gone. No dessert this time. I decided to follow the distributor’s suggestion and grilled a veal chop with a mixture of spices (minced onion, cayenne, and a bit of curry powder), accompanied by grilled eggplant slices with the same spices, and a commercially prepared Turkish salad, based on red pepper and tomato.

The wine bounced nicely off the delicious somewhat fat, somewhat rare meat. It didn’t add flavors of its own, but accompanied the food’s flavors excellently. It was powerful, but not overpowering. As its name indicates, Pecorino Toscano cheese comes from Tuscany, where it has been made from sheep’s milk for thousands of years. The cheese is moderately strong smelling and has a complex nutty flavor. The wine was smooth and round and had a pleasant tinge of tobacco. Just for the record I am not a smoker. In the presence of Asiago cheese from the Trentino-Alto Adige region of northern Italy, the wine became more robust. I remember when Chianti came in straw-covered bottles. In fact, I remember the bottles more than the wine itself. But times have changed.

This Chianti Classico was excellent, quite deserving of its top-of-the-line DOCG classification and well worth the price.

Just what can you print on a T-shirt?

Is this political correctness gone MAD?

Today, the BBC published an article about a man risking a fine for having an
"offensive" slogan on his T-shirt.

It reads, "Who the f**k is MICK JAGGER?"

He thought it was a bit of a laugh, but Peterborough City Council failed see
the funny side of the T-shirt.

Note: Even I "starred out some letters" maybe, I think it's
offensive...

Another man has been threatened with a £80 penalty notice after wearing a
top with the slogan: "Don't piss me off! I am running out of places to
hide the bodies."

It seems the "JAGGER" T-shirt was originally bought in Los Angeles,
where the local cops seem to be OK with the statement.

The BBC got an opinion from a criminal solicitor; "It is not necessary
for someone to have made an official complaint for the police to act, they just
have to think it might offend a hypothetical third party".

There is nothing inherently offensive about any word it just depends on the
context and company.

Words are, after all, merely combinations of sounds. What makes them offensive
is the meaning, or interpretation, given to those words by the individual. It is
the very act of declaring a word to be offensive which makes it offensive.

I guess most of the examples above are mildly offensive in certain
circumstances and even have a certain amusement value. I wonder which ones would
incur a fine or an ASBO from the local police?

Why is it an offence to wear a T-shirt for the police to act; "It is not

publishing a picture (which probably will have a far wider impact) on the
Internet?

One of the easiest things to do with public domain material is to simply make a collection of works. It is best to deal with works that are short, such as poems and short stories. Believe me, they exist, the authors and the people looking for them.

Now, the above is a small market because there aren't that many of these people. But, there is also almost no competition either. This is kind of like long tail keyword promotion where you find a niche where very few people are doing searches each month combined with a very few number of competing sites coming up in the search. In the case of public domain works, this competition will be even less. Why? The same reason why you took a look at this topic and said to yourself, 'Why would anybody care?' Well, if you just type the words 'public domain' into a Google search engine, you will find over 62 million sites. If there is that much info out there on public domain, then somebody has got to be interested in this stuff, otherwise a lot of people are wasting a lot of time.

The things that you can do with public domain works are limited only by your imagination. The point is, there are a ton of works out there that you don't have to do much with in order to make an income from them. You just have to find the time to put in the legwork to first find the work, and then decide what it is you want to do with it.

And again, for those of you who think there is no money in stuff that is almost 100 years old, take a look at what Walt Disney did and what Ted Turner just recently did with all those public domain movies.

The money is there to be had. You just have to go out and get it.

The walk from King John's Palace Ruins is a bit risky, as the pedestrian footpath gets narrow in the village centre and through traffic from the A614 & A1 absolutely thunders past. I nearly got wiped out a few times, so take care and wait for the infrequent breaks in the almost constant stream of fast moving traffic. The 30 MPH speed limit seems to be ignored completely. [map]

Fortunately, the Dog & Duck Pub is only a short walk from the ruins and a cold pint of cider was very welcome on a hot and sunny afternoon. [map]

If you are looking for fine Italian wine and food, consider the Tuscany region of central Italy. You may find a bargain, and I hope that you'll have fun on this fact-filled wine education tour.

Tuscany is located on the central western part of Italy on the Tyrrhenian Sea. It gets its name from an Etruscan tribe that settled the area about three thousand years ago. It has belonged to the Romans, the Lombards, and the Franks. More than four hundred years ago under the Medicis, Tuscany became a major European center. It is undoubtedly one of Italy's top tourist destinations as well as an ideal place for your villa when you hit it big, really big. According to one Seinfeld episode there are no villas to rent in Tuscany, but that was several years ago. On the other hand, time in Tuscany as elsewhere in Italy is measured in centuries. Tuscany's total population is about 3.5 million.

Florence is the birthplace of the Italian Renaissance and the administrative center of Tuscany. It is one of Italy's top tourist destinations, whose sites of interest are too numerous to list here. Siena and Pisa are two other major tourist destinations.

Tuscany is a center of industrial production, in particular metallurgy, chemicals, and textiles. Given the region's importance as an international art center for centuries, don't be surprised that it is an excellent place to appreciate and purchase fashion, jewelry, leather goods, marble, and other items of beauty. Florence is the home of the house of Gucci.

Tuscany produces a wide variety of cereal, olives, vegetables, and fruit. But not only vegetarians eat well. It is home to cattle, horses, pigs, and poultry. One local specialty is wild boar. On the coast, seafood is abundant.

Tuscany devotes over one hundred fifty thousand acres to grapevines, it ranks 4th among the 20 Italian regions. Its total annual wine production is about 58 million gallons, giving it an 8th place. About 70 perceny of the wine production is red or rosé, leaving 30 percent for white. The region produces 44 DOC wines. DOC stands for Denominazione di Origine Controllata, which may be translated as Denomination of Controlled Origin, presumably a high-quality wine and 7 DOCG white wine. The G in DOCG stands for Garantita, but there is in fact no guarantee that such wines are truly superior. The region produces 9 DOC wines. Tuscany also produces Super Tuscan wines, wines that may not have a prestigious classification but that are known to be outstanding. These wines are arguably the main reason that Italy was forced to revise its wine classification system. Fully 55 percent of Tuscan wine carries the DOC or DOCG designation. And remember, many of Tuscany's best wines carry neither designation. Tuscany! Is home to more than three dozen major and secondary grape varieties, about half white and half red.

Widely grown international white grape varieties include Trebbiano, Malvasia, and Sauvignon Blanc. The best-known strictly Italian white varieties are Vermentino and Vernaccia.

Widely grown international red grape varieties include Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. The best-known Italian red variety is Sangiovese, which is grown elsewhere, including California. A strictly Italian variety is Canaiolo.

Before reviewing the Tuscan wine and cheese that we were lucky enough to purchase at a local wine store and a local Italian food store, here are a few suggestions of what to eat with indigenous wines when touring this beautiful region.

Start with Panzanella, Bread and Tomato Salad.

For a second course, eat or share a Bistecca alla Fiorentina, (Texas-sized) Beef Steak.

If you have room, indulge in a Torta Rustica, Cornmeal Cake with Cream.

I'm not sure if it's age catching up on me, but I get desperately tired every afternoon around 2 o'clock. Perhaps my blood suger levels are not quite right. It doesn't seem to occur on weekend days, just during the working week.

If I'm working from home I can of course take a quick nap. However, that's not an option in a busy office and it would not a good example for the "boss" to be quietly snoring at his desk.

The weekend article submissions at LPR was quite low, as the new article spam and duplication killer software works from the source and doesn't require human input.

I found the "nap" article (below) by using the LPR site search.

Who would have guessed somebody could write an article about napping! NASA even run a nap research centre.

How To Design The Perfect Nap

Most people enjoy a good nap now and then, but are you really utilizing their full power? A correctly performed nap can give you a great boost in energy, focus, and concentration, but a poorly executed nap can leave you groggy and more tired than when you started. Several cultures around the world use a "siesta" in the afternoon to stay productive, and many workers in the U.S. have reported success avoiding afternoon drowsiness with a nap.

Some people (myself included) have even excelled on nothing but six well times naps per day, during polyphasic sleep. Taking six naps per day has given me a chance to design the perfect nap. Here's how:

Get the timing right. The single most important aspect of a nap is making it the right length, and it requires a little background explanation to understand why. It turns out that dreaming is the most important part of sleep. Test subjects who were deprived of dreams (meaning they were woken up when they started to dream, but otherwise allowed to sleep as much as they wanted) performed on tests as if they had not slept at all. Furthermore, the longer they were deprived of dreams, the more frequently their brains attempted to start dreaming. Mice who were deprived of dreams for more than a few weeks died! You may have noticed this on your own if you ever took a quick nap, and vividly remembered your dreams afterwards. When exhausted, you will tend to dream more.

So what does this all mean? It means that your goal during a nap is to enter the REM sleep phase quickly (this is where most dreaming occurs), and to wake up as soon as the REM sleep phase is over. If you sleep past the REM phase you'll enter deeper phases of sleep and it will be really difficult to get up! The only reason this is difficult is that everyone sleeps differently. For most people, their optimal nap time (where they can wake up just as they finish REM) is between 15 and 30 minutes, but you'll have to test to find yours precisely. What makes it more difficult is that you have to take into account how long it takes you to fall asleep. When you are first perfecting your naps, it could take quite a while to fall asleep, so I'd suggest starting with a 30-35 minute nap, and working your way down. Don't be surprised if after a 30 minute nap you are exhausted.

You may have gone right through REM into a deeper sleep phase. It will feel like being woken up in the middle of the night, and during these times I've had trouble with even the most basic tasks like keeping my balance or forming sentences. Each day, try a different length of nap, reducing the time by 3-5 minutes, and record your energy levels. As you learn to fall asleep quicker, and close in on your optimal time, you'll notice a remarkable thing: it's possible to wake up from a nap totally refreshed and alert! This is the sweet spot you are searching for.

Make sure you have optimal light and sound conditions for power napping, and you can use this tool whenever you need a boost!

A power nap (sometimes called a catnap) is a short nap, usually 15-20 minutes, coined by Cornell University social psychologist James Maas. It is thought by many to maximize the benefits of sleep versus time. This type of sleep pattern may be associated with polyphasic sleep; however, it is more often used to supplement normal sleep, especially when the sleeper has accumulated a sleep deficit.

Advocates of this sleep pattern recommend various durations for a power nap. Many have a precise time which they say is optimal—usually around 20-35 minutes. People who regularly take power naps usually have a good idea of what duration works best for them. Some people take power naps out of necessity. For example, someone who doesn't get enough sleep at night and is drowsy at work may sleep during his or her lunch break. Others may prefer to regularly take power naps even if their schedule allows a full night's sleep. Importantly, napping skills are trainable and have been shown to become more efficient in more experienced nappers.

NASA-supported sleep researchers are learning new and surprising things about naps.

Despite NASA recommendations that astronauts sleep 8 hours a day, they usually don't. Strange sights and sounds, the stress of riding a powerful rocket, the lack of a normal day-night cycle--all these things tend to keep space travelers awake. Studies show that astronauts typically sleep 0.5 to 2.5 hours less than they do on Earth.

Can Vineger Really Help Reduce Cholesterol and Food Intake?

Many remedies and treatments have been ascribed to vinegar over millennia in many different cultures. However, few have been verifiable using controlled medical trials and several that are effective to some extent have significant risks and side effects.

Cholesterol
A scientific study published in 2006 concluded that the test group fed with acetic acid (the main component of vinegar) had "significantly lower values for serum total cholesterol and triacylglycerols", among other health benefits.

Blood glucose control and diabetic management
Small amounts of vinegar (approx. 20 mls or two tablespoons of domestic vinegar) added to food, or taken along with a meal, have been shown by a number of medical trials to reduce the glycemic index of carbohydrate food for people with and without diabetes.

This has also been expressed as lower glycemic index ratings in the region of 30%.
Diet controlMultiple trials indicate that taking vinegar with food increases satiety (the feeling of fullness) and so reduces the amount of food consumed. Even a single application of vinegar can lead to reduced food intake for a whole day.

Some Ways People Use Vineger
1. Arthritis tonic and treatment; 2 spoonfuls of apple cider vinegar and honey in a glass of water several times daily.
2. Thirst-quenching drink: apple cider vinegar mixed with cold water.
3. Sagging cane chairs: sponge them with a hot solution of half vinegar and half water. Place the chairs out in the hot sun to dry.
4. Skin burns: apply ice cold vinegar right away for fast relief. Will prevent burn blisters.
5. Add a spoonful of vinegar to cooking water to make cauliflower white and clean.
6. Storing cheese: keep it fresh longer by wrapping it in a vinegar-soaked cloth and keeping it in a sealed container.
7. Remove stains from stainless steel and chrome with a vinegar-dampened cloth.
8. Rinse glasses and dishes in water and vinegar to remove spots and film.
9. Prevent grease build-up in your oven by frequently wiping it with vinegar.
10. Wipe jars of preserves and canned food with vinegar to prevent mold-producing bacteria.
11. To eliminate mildew, dust and odors, wipe down walls with vinegar-soaked cloth.
12. Clean windows with vinegar and water.
13. Hardened paint brushes: simmer in boiling vinegar and wash in hot soapy water.
14. Clean breadbox and food containers with vinegar-dampened cloth to keep fresh-smelling and clean.

21. When boiling eggs, add some vinegar to the water to prevent white from leaking out of a cracked egg.
22. When poaching eggs, add a teaspoon of vinegar to the water to prevent separation.
23. Weight loss: vinegar helps prevent fat from accumulating in the body.
24. Canned fish and shrimp: to give it a freshly caught taste, soak in a mixture of sherry and 2 tablespoons of vinegar.

39. Clean jars with vinegar and water to remove odor.
40. Avoid cabbage odor by adding vinegar to the cooking water.
41. Skunk odor: remove from pets by rubbing fur with vinegar.
42. Paint adheres better to galvanized metal that has been wiped with vinegar.
43. Pets' drinking water: add vinegar to eliminate odor and encourage shiny fur.
44. For fluffy meringue: beat 3 egg whites with a teaspoon of vinegar.
45. Pie crust: add 1 tablespoon vinegar to your pastry recipe for an exceptional crust.
46. Half a teaspoon per quart of patching plaster allows you more time to work the plaster before it hardens.
47. Prevent discoloration of peeled potatoes by adding a few drops of vinegar to water. They will keep fresh for days in fridge.
48. Poultry water: add vinegar to increase egg production and to produce tender meat.
49. Preserve peppers: put freshly picked peppers in a sterilized jar and finish filling with boiling vinegar.
50. Olives and pimentos will keep indefinitely if covered with vinegar and refrigerated.
51. Add 1 tsp. vinegar to cooking water for fluffier rice.
52. Add vinegar to laundry rinse water: removes all soap and prevents yellowing.
53. After shampoo hair rinse: 1 ounce apple cider vinegar in 1 quart of distilled water.
54. For a shiny crust on homemade bread and rolls: just before they have finished baking, take them out, brush crusts with vinegar, return to oven to finish baking.
55. Homemade sour cream: blend together 1 cup cottage cheese, 1/4 cup skim milk and 1 tsp. vinegar.
56. Boil vinegar and water in pots to remove stains.
57. Remove berry stains from hands with vinegar.
58. Prevent sugaring by mixing a drop of vinegar in the cake icing.
59. Cold vinegar relieves sunburn.
60.When boiling meat, add a spoonful of vinegar to the water to make it more tender.
61. Marinate tough meat in vinegar overnight to tenderize.
62. A strength tonic: combine raw eggs, vinegar and black pepper. Blend well.
63. Douche: 2 to 4 ounces of vinegar in 2 quarts of warm water.

Apple cider
Apple cider vinegar, otherwise known simply as cider vinegar, is made from cider or apple must, and is often sold unfiltered, with a brownish-yellow color; it often contains mother of vinegar. It is currently very popular, partly due to its alleged beneficial health and beauty properties (see below). Due to its acidity, apple cider vinegar can be very caustic, even burning the throat.
If taken straight (as opposed to usage in cooking), it should be diluted (e.g. with fruit juice) before drinking. Others dilute it with warm water and add some honey.

Hungarian wine has a history dating back to at least Roman times, and that history reflects the country's position between the Slavs and the Germanic peoples. The best-known wines are the white dessert wine Tokay (Tokaji) and Bull's Blood (Egri Bikavér), a full-bodied red wine.

Despite what many may think, the area known as Hungary holds more wine tradition than any other country in Europe. Most of this very tradition is just now surfacing in the light, with people finally starting to catch wind about everything Hungarian wine has to offer. Even though many wine drinkers aren’t familiar with Hungary - there are many who are.

Hungary is home to over 20 wine regions, fully of forests, vineyards, and orchards. With several different varieties of grapes to offer, the vineyards found in Hungary have flourished since the great Roman Times. The weather in Hungary is seasonal to say the least, with cold winters and extremely hot summers. This weather allows the soil in the country to be diverse, which allows wine makers to create a variety of quality wines.

Despite the communist control in the past, there are several different wines found in Hungary. Although the vineyards here produce a lot of excellent wines, Tokay Aszu is by far the favorite here and the wine that locals always love raising their glass to. Tokay Aszu is a popular wine with meals or dessert, in Hungary and also happens to be one of the most popular dessert wines in the entire world.

Tokay Aszu was discovered in the mid 17th century in Hungary, quickly becoming a favorite for many European aristocrats. Even though it was great to the taste, many believed that certain types of the wine had mystical healing powers. Although this was strictly a rumor, it actually helped the wine become more popular than ever. Over the years, Tokay Aszu was one indeed the most popular wine in Hungary, spreading to other areas of the world as well.

Egri Bikaver, also referred to as Bulls Blood is another popular wine found in Hungary. This is another popular wine for locals, and can be found throughout the world as well. Getting it’s name from it’s color, Bulls Blood is truly a feast for anyone who likes wine. The wine is dark red in color, yet sweet to the taste. The wine was first developed back in the 16th century, and remains popular even to this day.

If you ever visit Hungary, there are many places you can visit to get some great wine. You should also make a point to visit Tokay, located in the northeast. You can take a train from Budapest and arrive here in a few hours. There are several different wine flavors and varieties here, sure to please just about anyone. The wineries found throughout the Tokay area are normally open for tours and tasters from May to the end of October. If you visit during these months, you can tour the underground cellars, sample the superb wine, and learn more than you ever thought possible about the manufacturing of Hungarian wines.

All in the all, the wine found in Hungary is great to have in your collection or just have around the house for special occasions. You can get it by the bottle, the glass, or by the case. All types of Hungarian wine has been perfected over the years, making it something that you really can’t go wrong with. If you like to drink wine, as most of us do, you really can’t go wrong with any type of Hungarian wine. Hungarian wine gives wine lovers plenty to study, plenty to order, and plenty to drink. The wine is very tasty and refreshing - and it helps to keep the nation of Hungary thirsty for more.

I can remember back in the 60's when the airwaves were filled with adverts extolling the virtues of "Going to Work on an Egg". At the time (10 years old) I thought it was a very funny idea. Just how would you ride an egg to work?

It seems todays advertising standards watchdog is trying to stop a series of 50 year aniversary adverts being shown. Somebody (?) has decided that eating an egg everyday is a harmful diet. This is just another continuation of the Labour Party assault on privacy and freedom of choice. It seems that government clones/clowns are aiming to control every aspect of daily life; even how and when an individual can eat an EGG!

Ask any cook; eggs are an essential part of many recipes and sauces.

Boiled Egg Recipe (without the egg)

1 pinch of salt

That's it except for toast cut into "solders".

I think I'm turning into a grumpy old man... but things like this make my blood boil.

Description : Vitamin A is sometimes also called Carotenoids or Retinol. It is a fat soluble vitamin. This vitamin is essential for us to form and keep healthy teeth, a healthy skeleton, and healthy soft tissue, mucous membranes, and skin.

Vitamin A also produces the pigment in the retina of the eye, which is why it is also called Retinol. It helps with great night vision, especially if there is low light. This vitamin is also necessary for breast feeding and reproduction.

Vitamin A, one active form, comes from animal sources. Almost all of these animal sources are high in cholesterol and saturated fat. The exception to this is skim milk. The sources for vitamin A include milk, eggs, meat, cheese, cream, liver, kidney, cod, and halibut oil.

Retinol is another active form of vitamin A. This form of the vitamin can be found in milk, animal liver, and a variety of fortified foods.

Carotenoids are dark colored natural dyes that that are found in plant foods. These dyes can turn into a form of vitamin A.

One of these carotenoids is beta-carotene, which is an antioxidant. An antioxidant protects the cells from free radicals, which are unstable substances. These substances are believed to contribute to or cause certain chronic diseases and the degenerative process of aging. Some great sources of this type of vitamin A are winter squashes, pumpkins, sweet potatoes, carrots, apricots, pink grapefruit, cantaloupe, spinach, broccoli, and most other dark green leafy vegetables.

The brighter and more intense the color is in a vegetable or fruit, the more beta-carotene there is in it. Vegetable sources have no cholesterol or fat. Without enough vitamin A in your diet, vision problems and infectious diseases can occur more easily. If there is too much vitamin A in your diet you will get sick. This can also cause birth defects in babies. It requires several hundred thousand IU to cause acute vitamin A poisoning for an adult, but babies and small children will require a lot smaller dose for the same effects.

Chronic vitamin A poisoning, which occurs over an extended period of time, has been seen in adults who take 25,000 IU or more daily or on a regular basis. Too much beta-carotene in your diet may turn your skin a yellow or orange color. Once you reduce the intake of beta-carotene in your diet, the color goes away and your skin returns to normal.

It's hard to believe the weekend has finished and Monday morning has come so quickly. Only a few articles were submitted since Friday, so at least I have an easy morning's work.

One of my favourite destinations is Ireland, so when the article below "dropped-in" for approval, I read it with interest.

Killarney does sound a wonderful place to visit.

This is my selection for "Article of the Weekend":

Best 10 things to do and see in Killarney in under 10 days

1. Jaunting Cars

Take a horse-drawn guided tour by the famous lakes and ancient castles. Jaunting Cars are available for hire at the following locations. Choice of destinations offered. Cost (depending on distance): €25- €57 per jaunting car (up to 4 persons). First Entrance to Killarney National Park (1M). Follow N71 for 3 kms. Car park and jaunting car stand on left. Also available from Kate Kearney’s Cottage. Follow R562 for 5 kms. approx. First surfaced road left after Hotel Europe (unmarked road). Bridge over River Laune. Left at Dunloe Castle Hotel. Left at next junction to Kate Kearney’s Cottage.

2. Ross Castle

Ross Castle is 10 minutes by car from Killarney. It started life in the 15th century as a chieftain’s stronghold but has been adapted many times since. It was opened to the public after restoration in 1990. This Castle may be considered a typical example of the stronghold of an Irish Chieftain during the Middle Ages. Probably built in the late 15th century by one of the O’Donoghue Ross chieftains. Much of the bawn was removed by the time the Barrack building was added on the south side of the castle sometime in the middle of the 18th century.

Picturesquely sited on the edge of Lough Leane, legend had it that the castle would never be conquered by land. In the 17th century, Cromwellian forces successfully attacked the castle by crossing the lake, fulfilling the prophecy.

After the tour, take the trip to Innisfallen Island on adjacent Lough Leane. It’s home to a ruined 12th-century Augustinian priory where the Annals of Innisfallen, a chronicle of early Irish history, were written. It’s one of the most serene places you’re ever likely to visit. You can take a motor launch but it’s much nicer to row. Ross Castle is open daily (closed November-March) with guided tours every half hour for £3. One-hour water bus tours of the lake, including Innisfallen, cost £5. Rowing boat hire to Innisfallen (two-hour/three-mile round trip) costs £5 an hour.

3. McSorley’s pub.

Probably the most lively place in Killarney, at night at least. Frequent live music with some of the best bands playing during summer months. No cover charge. Great reputation. For the young at heart. Drinking and loudness involved.

4. Muckross House

The focal point of Killarney’s Middle Lake is Muckross House and Gardens. Built for the Herbert family in 1843, the 20-room mansion hosted a royal visit by Queen Victoria in 1861 and many of the items on display date from that occasion. The extensive gardens, famous for their giant rhododendrons, offer panoramic views over the lake and include a 17-acre arboretum. The adjoining Muckross Traditional Farms recreate rural Ireland as it was in the 1930s, with three separate working farms complete with shire horses, donkeys, geese, chickens and traditional farm machinery. Muckross House and Gardens/Muckross Traditional Farms (00 353 64 31440, www.muckross-house.ie). Open daily 9am-7pm. Farms closed November-mid-March, £4, joint ticket £6.

5. Golf

With its world famous golf courses including Killeen and O’Mahony’s Point, Killarney truly is a Golfer’s paradise. Other famous Kerry courses such as Ballybunion, Ring of Kerry, Kenmare, Dooks and Tralee are all within a short drive of Killarney.

6. Walking/Cycle

Killarney National Park is a walker’s and cyclist’s paradise. There are numerous options but try the four-hour/10-mile circumnavigation of Middle Lake. From the ruins of Muckross Abbey, follow Lover’s Walk by the lake shore to the Muckross Peninsula, then along the Arthur Young Trail through one of the largest natural Yew woods in Europe. Keep on to Brikeen Bridge and Dinis Island on the far shore of the lake, returning via Toothache Bridge and Torc Waterfall. £7 for a day’s cycle hire from O’Sullivan’s Cycles, Bishop’s Lane, New Street, Killarney, Co Kerry (00 353 64 31282).

7. Murphy’s Ice Cream, 37 Main Street

Award-winning ice-cream, teas and coffees, chocolates, bakery and other indulgences. Described by ‘Let’s go Ireland’ as “The only cappuccino worthy of the name for 100 miles” and by the Sunday Independent as “The most sinful cakes”. Need i say more?

8. Go to an Irish sport event and find out what drives half the population of Ireland (mad). A good place to start is the website of the local Gaelic Athletics Association. Amateur, passionate, popular and a great way to meet locals and understand the culture.

9. Go to Sunday morning Mass. Even if you’re not Catholic its a great way to see and meet locals but above all observe one of the traditions that reveals most about Ireland.

10. Get lost - a personal favorite. Lower your expectations, take a packed lunch, get off the beaten track, take random roads, stop in the nicest pub around lunchtime, have a pint. Conentrate on roads that take you up mountains; there are a hundred views around Killarney each just as worthwhile as the famous ‘Ladies View‘.

Although KILLARNEY has been commercialized to saturation point and has little in the way of architectural interest, the real reason for coming here is without doubt the surrounding landscape. The ocean looks enormous, and you can stand in the sunshine and watch a storm coming in for miles before you have to run for cover. The only catch is that a good part of the county is very much on the tourist trail. However, the plus side of Kerry's long tradition of welcoming tourists is that it's very easy country to travel in, with plenty of accommodation and food in all price brackets, and, during the summer at least, transport is pretty good - though with some notable exceptions.

Broadly speaking, Kerry divides into four areas: the Dingle Peninsula; the Iveragh Peninsula, encircled by the Ring of Kerry, with Killarney in its hinterland; the Kenmare River, bordered to the north and south by the Iveragh and Beara peninsulas; and northern Kerry, from Tralee to the Shannon. Each section is quite distinct and has its partisans. By far the most visited area - indeed the most visited in the whole of Ireland - is Killarney and the Ring of Kerry . The LPR web site has had some great new articles submitted and published during the last few days. I quite like the Destinations topic as I like traveling, but my favourite subject has to be "Food & Drink". I've republished probably the most delicious cake recipe submitted so far, it's a mixture of fruits and nuts and is definately one I'm going to try out.

Please a Crowd With Famous Hummingbird Cake

For a delicious treat, try this delicious concoction of mashed banana, pineapple, pecans, and cream cheese icing. It has been famous for years and is a very popular and satisfying dessert. While this sweet and flavorful three-layer treat may look difficult to prepare, in fact it can be finished in about an hour. It is an excellent choice for family gatherings and other occasions. It is easy to prepare, freezes well, and serves many. Guaranteed to please.

No-one seems to know for sure how this cake came to be known as "Hummingbird Cake". One legend says the name came about because each delicious bite makes you hum with delight. Another suggests the name is the result of the cake being as sweet as the nectar prepared to attract hummingbirds to our homes. Whatever the reason, this cake will be a real crowd pleaser!
When purchasing ingredients, try to buy the best quality possible. The difference in the taste is definitely worth the extra cost.

Ingredients:

3 cups/750 mL all-purpose flour

2 cups/500 mL sugar

1 tsp/5 mL baking soda

1 tsp/5 mL salt

1 tsp/5 mL gourmet cinnamon

3 eggs, beaten well

1 cup/250 mL vegetable oil

1-1/2 tsp/7.5 mL Premium Vanilla

1 tsp/5 mL gourmet butter extract

1 can (8 oz/227 g) undrained crushed pineapple

1 cup/250 mL chopped pecans

2 cups/500 mL chopped bananas

Frosting

1/2 cup/125 mL chopped pecans

Frosting:

1 package (8 oz/227 g) softened cream cheese

1/2 cup/125 mL butter or margarine, softened

3-1/2 cups/875 mL powdered sugar

1 tsp/5 mL gourmet vanilla nut extract

How to Make Hummingbird Cake:

1) Combine flour with the sugar, baking soda, salt, and cinnamon in large mixing bowl. Mix ingredients together well.

2) Stir in eggs, oil and extracts; stir just until dry ingredients are moist - do not beat.

3) Add crushed pineapple, pecans, and bananas and fold into mixture. Spoon the batter into three well-greased and floured 9-inch/23-cm round cake pans.

4) Bake at 350 F or 180 C for 25 to 30 minutes. Test for doneness with a wooden toothpick inserted in the center. When it comes out clean, the cake is ready.

5) Cool in pans (use wire rack if available) for 20 minutes, remove from pans and cool completely. Use a serrated knife to level the tops of the layers.

6) Spread cream cheese frosting between layers, and over the top and sides of the cake. Sprinkle chopped pecans over the top of the cake. If desired, you can crush additional pecans and press them into the sides of the frosting. Try putting sliced maraschino cherries on top of the cake for a different touch.

Refrigerate for at least 24 hours before serving; the flavors will blend and intensify upon standing. This cake is one of those special recipes that tastes even better the next day, thus it is ideal for preparing a bit ahead of time.

Frosting:

Combine the cream cheese and butter, and beat until smooth. Add powdered sugar and extract, then beat mixture until light and fluffy.

Preparation Tips:

Enhance the banana flavor by processing the bananas in a blender.

Make sure the three cake pans do not touch each other or the sides of the oven. If the pans touch each other, or the sides of the oven, the cake will not bake evenly as it should.

Makes 12 servings.

Friday night is WINE NIGHT!

Bank Holiday has finally arrived. A long weekend to relax and perhaps try a few new recipies and glug more than a few glasses of wine.

The LPR directory has had almost 200,000 page views and now has over 10,000 articles. It's been hard work and every editor/article approver deserves a "pat-on-the-back" for maintaining the integrity of our content. Sure a few spam articles slipped through the screening process, but far more were deleted. Visitor feedback has been very positive and much of the LPR traffic is from return visitors. Its a combination of an alcohol fruity taste drink thats totally out of this world as well as refreshing and tangy. Who knows you may even want to have more when you get a taste of it. But you dont really need to be in the Bahamas to take a sip on this drink, all you need is its various recipes, and youre on your way to getting that feel of the Bahamian spirit. Here are some Bahama Mama recipes:

Bahama Mama (Original Recipe)

1/4 oz 151 Proof rum

1/4 oz Coffee liqueur

1/2 oz Dark rum

1/2 oz Coconut liqueur

4 oz Pineapple juice

1/2 Bananas

1 splash Grenadine syrup

2 oz overproof rum

4oz coconut milk

4oz Pineapple juice

How to do it: Put all ingredients in a blender with half a cup of crushed ice. Blend well and pour into a tall glass, serve.

Bahama Mama 4

6 oz Pineapple juice

1 oz Nassau Royale rum

1 oz Malibu coconut rum

1 oz Dark rum

1/2 oz Grenadine syrup

How to do it: In a cocktail shaker, shake all ingredients together with ice. Pour with ice into a hurricane glass and serve with a slice of orange.

Bahama Mama NC

3 oz pineapple juice

3/4 oz Banana liqueur

3/4 oz Light rum

1 oz Malibu coconut rum

1 oz Orange juice

1 dash Grenadine syrup

How to do it: In a cocktail shaker, pour all ingredients together and shake well. Pour in a pina-colada glass with cubed or crushed ice. Serve.

Bahama Mama Sunrise

1/2 oz grenadine syrup

2 oz Pineapple juice

1 oz dark rum

1 oz spiced rum

4 oz orange juice

How to do it: Combine and mix all ingredients and serve over ice in a tall glass.

Easy Bahama Mama

1/2 tsp Sugar syrup

1 dash grenadine syrup

1 dash Amaretto almond liqueur

1 Maraschino cherry

2 oz Pineapple juice

2 oz Dark rum

How to do it: Just pour everything over crushed ice in a margarita glass and decorate with a cherry.

This combination of shallow and deep water makes diving and snorkelling both challenging and intriguing, with numerous reefs waiting to be explored just beyond the shores of the gorgeous, uncrowded beaches.

The native music of the Bahamas is a combination of African and Caribbean rhythms, often played on drums and various skin or pipe instruments. Rake'n'scrape music, prominent on the Out Islands, features rough guitars and percussion instruments made from ratchets and saws; calypso and reggae are also popular.

Traditional Bahamian meals may include seafood like grouper, conch and snapper (usually broiled or baked in a tomato sauce), along with tropical fruits like guava and papaya. As former members of a British colony, Bahamians have adopted many traditional English dishes , or adapted them to suit local tastes. These include macaroni and cheese, peas and rice, boiled potatoes and other vegetable dishes. A Bahamian breakfast may consist of anything from fried eggs, bacon, toast, tomato and coffee to more Caribbean-influenced dishes like johnny cakes with coconut. Lunch tends toward seafood stews and soups or large conch salads.

With tourism expanding to the Bahamas, many different types of imported culinary styles have flourished here as well. On New Providence and Grand Bahama, you can find restaurants serving Continental, Mediterranean and Greek cuisine, and even Mexican and pan-Asian dishes, in elegant surroundings with excellent service and fine wines. Many of these restaurants are located at major hotels and resorts and require reservations, while other eateries in Nassau, Paradise Island and Grand Bahama operate independently and cater to a more eclectic crowd.
Every town or settlement in the Bahamas has its share of take-away restaurants, featuring traditional offerings like fried chicken, french fries and deep-fried seafood . Most Out Island restaurants serve fairly simple and uniform fare, usually fish, conch or fried chicken, with fresh Bahamian lobster a rare treat. Island desserts are often delightful, especially the coconut concoctions, rice pudding, gingerbread and fruit cocktail.

Bahamians are not much for drinking wine or liquor, though the national beer , Kalik, is a fine elixir enjoyed throughout the islands. Somedays, it's great to be choosen to update the LPR company Blog, especially when a really great article gets submitted that's not only well written, but informative and about MY favorite subject... WINE.

Now I just love a glass or three of wine with my dinner and maybe a few afterwards. The thing is, I never once thought about the history and origins of wine.

The Origins of Wine and Winemaking

Wine has a long and venerable history, with references to its use cropping up in ancient texts from thousands of years ago - not least, of course, in the Bible. We know for a fact that it was firmly established in the Middle Eastern culture of around two thousand years ago, and for it to be so commonplace at that time it must have been around for quite some time before that.

Viticulture was certainly a large part of the economy of the Roman Empire, and the spread of Roman civilisation included the spread of wine growing and wine drinking as the colonising soldiers moved across the Old World. In ancient Rome, a common form of wine was known as mulsum, heavily sweetened with honey, and produced on large agrarian estates largely by the slave population. What remained in the wine press after crushing the grapes - seeds and skins mainly - was often fed to livestock, or alternatively brewed into a very low quality 'wine' and given to the slaves who'd grown the grapes.

We also know that winemaking was familiar to the ancient Greeks, from whom the Romans learned so much, and there's physical evidence of this in the form of a stone wine press found in a Minoan villa on the island of Crete, dating back to around 1600 BC. The winemaking facilities discovered there appeared to be quite advanced and sophisticated, suggesting that the Minoans had been practising the art of winemaking for a considerable period before that date.

Prior to this, the trail is a little less clear as we go further back into history. The ancient Greeks had strong trading links with nearby eastern cultures such as Egypt, and although we can't be sure, it seems that it was from the ancient Egyptians that the Greeks learned to make wine.

Physical evidence of wine production in ancient Egypt includes remains of wine jars and stoppers dating back to the earliest years of the civilisation, and wine was used both as a food and a medicine. Wine in pharonic times was not only made from grapes, but also from figs, pomegranates, and other fruits, a practice which continues across the world to this day in the rural production of 'country wines' such as damson and elderberry.

The first great civilisation of historic times was in Mesopotamia, close to Egypt, in what is modern day Iraq and surrounding areas. Although records from this era are sketchy, considering that writing was not invented until the latter part of the civilisation, there is evidence that wine was produced here too. A clay jar bearing traces of what could have been wine has been discovered in what is now northern Iran, and carbon dating shows that it was made around 5000-5400 BC. This is the oldest known evidence of wine consumption, but as this period of pre-history stretches back to 8500 BC, it is likely that winemaking had been known and practised for maybe thousands of years before that.

So, next time you relax with a glass in your hand, ponder for a moment that what you are drinking could be the results of over ten thousand years of cumulative learning and experimentation with the magical process of fermenting grapes!

Friday is traditionally a day for eating fish, well it was/is in my house. On a VERY slow afternoon, I thought I'd do some research to find out why, while waiting for the clock to tick down and signal "Happy Hour"; the end of another working week.

Fish on Friday

The long-standing Roman Catholic tradition of not eating meat other than fish on Fridays (and of substituting fish for other types of meat on that day) continues to influence habits even in semi-secular and secular societies. Friday night remains a traditional occasion for patronising fish-and-chip shops and many cafeterias and similar establishments, while varying their menus on other days of the week, habitually offer fish and chips every Friday.[11]
Chips may have become associated with meals of fried fish because the fat used for frying the fish often became too hot for good frying. To return the fat to an optimal temperature, chefs dropped cut-up potatoes into the fat. Legend has it that shops initially gave the resultant 'chips' away free with the fish.[source: Wiki - Fish & Chips]

Fascinating to learn that potatoes were added to the menu by "accident". I think it was more likely that better transport made distribution of produce much easier and the two naturally got combined. Given a choice, I'd rather have curry & chips!

Fish and Chips in Seahouses

Alnmouth
It's just three miles north from Warkworth to the seaside resort of ALNMOUTH , whose narrow, mostly nineteenth-century centre is strikingly situated on a steep spur of land between the wide sandy beach and the estuary of the Aln. Alnmouth was a busy and prosperous port up until 1806, when the sea, driven by a freakish gale, broke through to the river and changed its course, moving the estuary from the south to the north side of Church Hill and rendering the original harbour useless. Alnmouth never really recovered, though it has been a low-key holiday spot since Victorian times, as attested by the elegant seaside villas.

Alnwick
The unassuming town of ALNWICK (pronounced "Annick"), thirty miles north of Newcastle and four miles inland from Alnmouth, is renowned for its castle - seat of the dukes of Northumberland - which overlooks the River Aln immediately to the north of the town centre. Alnwick itself is an appealing market town of cobbled streets and Georgian houses, centred on the old cross in Market Place, site of a weekly market (Saturdays) since the thirteenth century.

Bamburgh
Flanking a triangular green in the lee of its castle, three miles north of Seahouses, the tiny village of BAMBURGH is only a five-minute walk from two splendid sandy beaches, backed by rolling, tufted dunes. From the sands Bamburgh Castle (April-Oct daily 11am-5pm) is a spectacular sight, its elongated battlements crowning a formidable basalt crag high above the beach.

This beautiful spot was first fortified by the Celts, but its heyday was as an Anglo-Saxon stronghold, one-time capital of Northumbria and the protector of the preserved head and hand of St Oswald, the seventh-century king who invited St Aidan over from Iona to convert his subjects. Rotted by centuries of seaspray and buffeted by winter storms, Bamburgh Castle struggled on until 1894, when its new owner, Lord Armstrong, demolished most of the structure to replace it with a cumbersome castle-mansion.

The focal point of the new building was the King's Hall, a soulless teak-ceilinged affair of colossal dimensions, whose main redeeming feature is an exquisite collection of Fabergé stone animal carvings. In the ground floor of the keep, the stone-vaulted ceiling maintains its Norman appearance, making a suitable arena for a display of fetters and man-traps.

Berwick-upon-Tweed
Before the union of the English and Scottish crowns in 1603, BERWICK-UPON-TWEED , some twelve miles north of Holy Island, was the quintessential frontier town, changing hands no fewer than fourteen times between 1174 and 1482, when the Scots finally ceded the stronghold to the English. Interminable cross-border warfare ruined Berwick's economy, turning the prosperous Scottish port of the thirteenth century into an impoverished garrison town, which the English forcibly cut off from its natural trading hinterland up the River Tweed. By the late sixteenth century, Berwick's fortifications were in a dreadful state of repair and Elizabeth I, apprehensive of the resurgent alliance between France and Scotland, had the place rebuilt in line with the latest principles of military architecture.

Today, the easy stroll along the top of the ramparts offers a succession of fine views out to sea, across the Tweed and over the orange-tiled rooftops of a town that's distinguished by its elegant Georgian mansions.

Craster and Beadnell
Heading northeast out of Alnwick along the B1340, it's a six-mile hop to the region's kipper capital, the tiny fishing village of CRASTER , perched above its minuscule harbour. There's not a great deal to make you stop long, but you can buy kippers here at Robson's factory and have a pot of tea in the Bark Pots . Even better is the Jolly Fisherman , the pub above the harbour, with sea views from its back window and famously good crab sandwiches. Most spectacularly, however, the village provides access to Dunstanburgh Castle (April-Sept daily 10am-6pm; Oct daily 10am-5pm; Nov-March Wed-Sun 10am-4pm), whose shattered medieval ruins occupy a magnificent promontory about thirty minutes' windy walk up the coast.

Holy Island
There's something rather menacing about the approach to Holy Island , past the barnacle-encrusted marker poles that line the causeway. The danger of drowning is real enough if you ignore the safe crossing times posted at the start of the three-mile trip across the tidal flats. (The island is cut off for about five hours every day, so to avoid a tedious delay consult the tide timetables at one of the region's tourist offices or in the local newspapers.) Once here, it's easy to picture the furious Viking hordes sweeping across Holy Island, giving no quarter to the monks at this quiet outpost of early Christianity.

Today's sole village is plain in the extreme, which doesn't deter summer day-trippers from clogging the car parks as soon as the causeway is open. But Holy Island has a distinctive and isolated atmosphere, especially out of season.

Once known as Lindisfarne , Holy Island has an illustrious history. It was here that St Aidan of Iona founded a monastery at the invitation of King Oswald of Northumbria in 634. The monks quickly evangelized the northeast and established a reputation for scholarship and artistry, the latter exemplified by the Lindisfarne Gospels , the apotheosis of Celtic religious art, now kept in the British Museum. The monastery had sixteen bishops in all, the most celebrated being St Cuthbert , who only accepted the job after Ecgfrith, another Northumbrian king, pleaded with him. But Cuthbert never settled here and, within two years, he was back in his hermit's cell on the Farne Islands, where he died in 687. His colleagues rowed the body back to Lindisfarne, which became a place of pilgrimage until 875, when the monks abandoned the island in fear of marauding Vikings, taking Cuthbert's remains with them - the first part of the saint's long posthumous journey to Durham. In 1082 Lindisfarne, renamed Holy Island, was colonized by Benedictines from Durham, but the monastery was a shadow of its former self, a minor religious house with only a handful of attendant monks, the last of whom was evicted at the Dissolution.

Warkworth
WARKWORTH , a coastal hamlet set in a loop of the River Coquet a couple of miles from Amble, is best seen from the north, from where the grey-stone terraces of the long main street slope up towards the commanding remains of Warkworth Castle (daily: April-Sept 10am-6pm; Oct 10am-5pm; Nov-March 10am-1pm & 2-4pm). Enough remains of the outer wall to give a clear impression of the layout of the medieval bailey, but - apart from the well-preserved gatehouse through which the site is entered - nothing catches your attention as much as the keep . Mostly built in the fourteenth century, this three-storeyed structure, with its polygonal turrets and high central tower, has a honeycomb-like interior, a fine example of the designs developed by the castle-builders of Plantagenet England.

LPR Site is Back Online After FIVE Days - Barcelona Destination

My ranting a raving finally paid off. Globat fixed their SQL server and then sent me instructions for refreshing the LPR database. This seems to have fixed the slow loading issue and things now appear to be working OK; FIVE days from my initial support contact. This is just not good enough.

I need a holiday!

The destinations directory at LPR is full of excellent travel and destination articles and is a good place to start any holiday research.

Barcelona sounds like a good place to visit for a good night out. This is the LPR destination article of the week.

Sleepless Barcelona

Barcelona has a pretty hectic nightlife and even though it starts late it also ends late or more precisely early in the morning, without taking into account the after parties that go until midday.

There are party establishments all over the city and sometimes you do not even need one because the party atmosphere is everywhere, in the streets, on the beach, you just need the right attitude.

You do not have to worry about the area of the city you are staying in because in every district there is an amazing place to go to. If you are in La Barceloneta you could party at Le Kashba, the Catwalk or Danzatoria. In Eixample you can go to Domestic, Sala Cibeles or Guardarropia. In El Raval party can be found in Salsitas, La Paloma or el Moog. In Montjuic, more specifically in the Spanish village you can go to La Terrazza or Discoteque; And these are just a few examples of the countless alternatives you have in some of the areas of Barcelona.

No matter what day of the week it is you will find party in Barcelona. There are places that open the 360 days of the year and some others open almost every day of the week but surely there will be a good establishment opened the day you are in town.

Usually the party starts in the bars which are opened until 3 am, after that night lovers head to the night clubs that close at 6 or 7 am and if you are the type that wishes to get going you can always find a good after party.

A good piece of advise is to relax and rest through the evening and in the early night not only in order to save energy but also because the night activities begin around 11 pm, never go to a bar before that time or to a nightclub before 2 am, there is no point because it will be dead, therefore you can get bored waiting until the party gets started.

Be prepared to meet loads of people from many places, including the most exotic, while partying in Barcelona. People that party in Barcelona are very outgoing and will talk to you as if they knew you for a long time, do not feel intimidated if a complete stranger offers you a drink or a cigarette as a way to start a conversation.

Finally it is important for visitors to know that Barcelona has all kinds of parties, there is a place for every person to enjoy through the night. There are techno places, as well as hip hop, salsa, funk, alternative, electronic and many more.

There is no doubt the party scene of Barcelona is outstanding, it will not disappoint you.

Nor should you necessarily eschew local chain or franchise outfits, which can be surprisingly good and sometimes score quite well on ambience and decor.

The best times to go to Barcelona are late spring and early autumn , when the weather is still comfortably warm, around 21-25°C and walking the streets isn't a chore. In summer , the city can be unbearably hot and humid with temperatures averaging 28°C. August, especially, is a month to be avoided, since the climate is at its most unwelcoming and many shops, bars and restaurants close for the month as local inhabitants head out of the city in droves. It's worth considering a winter break in the city, as long as you don't mind the prospect of occasional rain. It's generally still warm enough to sit out at a café, even in December when the temperature hovers around 13°C.

The LPR web site is nearly back to normal. It's taken me 4 days and endless emails and live chat sessions with Globat support. I got really mad at them at one stage and considered closing the whole thing down...

Where Does Time Go And How Can I Stop It?

As a child I thought my grandmother was a bit strange because she complained about how fast time went. Fast? It was forever until cookie time. That was then. Now time passes so fast I feel wind burn.

I have to prioritize. I have to learn to say no because no one will say it for me. I have to stop worrying about things that probably won't happen - skip to the worst case scenario, figure out how to handle it and let go.

A friend handles her worries by writing them on slips of paper. She puts the slips into a special box, which she calls God's mailbox, and then she lets go.

Instant coffee, two-hour photo, same-day dry cleaning all feed our need to get things done fast. Computers, e-mail and cell phones further feed our fast frenzy. In spite of all that, we can't save any time to do nothing.

In spite of grandmother's complaints, time must have passed slower for her generation. Daily activities took longer - cooking, corresponding, traveling. There must have been time to daydream.

If you want to see where time went, you can look at how far you've progressed in your career, how much your children have grown - how much the roots of your hair show. You can also look at credit card bills, car loans and mortgage payments. At least these leave paper trails.

Time goes faster when you're having fun and the trip back from a vacation goes faster than the trip to it.

You can try to slow time down, but I've found only two ways. One is having a root canal and the other is a visit from my mother-in-law. Both are too painful.

Holding a jar of thyme in my hand worked - but only when I was cooking.

We spend one-third of our lives in bed - but not necessarily sleeping. My husband lies in bed worrying about not sleeping. Because most heart attacks occur in bed during the early morning hours, get up. You want to slow time - not stop it.

Eventually we have to bite the bullet - but not too hard - and stop wasting time worrying about how fast it goes. Time made me who I am today; and if I avoid mirrors, I like who I am. Nevertheless, I can't figure out how to stop and smell the roses I never had time to plant.

Ecuador is Very Diverse

The Republic of Ecuador is a representative democratic republic in South America, bordered by Colombia on the north, by Peru on the east and south, and by the Pacific Ocean on the west.

Ecuadors capital is Quito and is located in the province of Pichincha in the Sierra region. Its largest city is Guayaquil, located in the province of Guayas in the Coast. Cotopaxi, which is located just south of Quito, in the neighbouring province of that same name, is one of the worlds highest active volcanoes. Mount Chimborazo is considered to be the most distant point from the centre of the Earth, given the ovoid shape of the Earth, which is widest at the equator.

Tungurahua volcano, overlooking the town of Banos, south of Quito, has recently begun erupting again causing nearby villages to be evacuated. Travellers should monitor the news for any ongoing developments and heed any local advice regarding the mountain.

The smallest country in the rugged Andean highlands, Ecuador has an array of vibrant indigenous cultures, well preserved colonial architecture, otherworldly volcanic landscapes and dense rainforest.

The country exports primary products such as oil, bananas, flowers and shrimp, fluctuations in world market prices can have a substantial domestic impact.

The largest ethnic group is comprised of Mestizos, the mixed descendants of Spanish colonists and indigenous Native Americans, who constitute over half of the population.

The food in Ecuador is very diverse, varying with altitude as do the agricultural conditions. Pork, chicken, meat or guinea pig are popular in the mountain regions served with an immense variety of cereals, potatoes or rice.

There is a high risk to the security of those travelling in the northern areas of Ecuador that border with Colombia because of kidnappings and increased crime. Landmines are present in the Cordillera Del Condor region, bordering Peru. Travel to these areas should be avoided.

In terms of weather, there are only two real seasons. The rainy season and the dry season but there are significant variations among the geographical regions and temperature is often a factor of altitude. Even during the rainy season, most days are sunny until the afternoon. Coastal Ecuador is quite cloudy most of the time but enjoys daily highs averaging around 30 all the year round and a short but quite damp wet season between January and April. The Galapagos Islands are strangely dry for their equatorial position.

Ecuador may be tiny, but it packs a spectacular punch.
